Energy Programs: Bioenergy

Bioenergy Energy Market Overview

Bioenergy is renewable energy derived from biological materials. It includes biofuels derived from sources such as ethanol and sugar, as well as biomass, biogas and landfill gas.

Rising energy prices, concerns about climate change and new public policies, including the Energy Policy Act of 2005, are driving investments in bioenergy. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, bioenergy derived from plant materials—including grains, oilseeds and sugar—has been one of the most rapidly growing sectors. Today, the largest bioenergy sources are ethanol biofuels and biodiesel. The development and use of both will grow dramatically as the country strives to meet The Renewable Fuels Standard target, which mandates availability of 7.5 billion gallons of biofuels by 2012.

As an emerging and abundant clean source of energy, bioenergy has unlimited potential to provide environmental, economic and social benefits, including:

  • Serving as a revenue-generating disposal solution for agricultural waste
  • Creating jobs in rural communities
  • Providing a cost-competitive option to carbon-based fuel supplies
  • Creating new supplies for base load energy production
